Experience the History and Art of DC's Unique Alleyways
This tour takes guests through the Blagden Alley/Naylor Court historic district, a unique section of DC known as "Old City." This area represents a uniquely preserved section of the extensive alleyway system in Washington. The Alleyways of DC served a distinct purpose as a city planning feature, but they also provided a hidden safe space where escaped enslaved people and the economically disadvantaged could find inexpensive housing and live their lives away from prying eyes. While city officials condemned life in the alleyways as dangerous, dirty and diseased, they were in fact a place where communities sustained each other and provided security. Tour starts at 909 M Street NW DC, the former home of America's first black Senator Blanche K. Bruce. It then winds through Blagden Alley, where guests are not only told the history of the people who used to live there, but they are also treated to beautiful street art. After a half-way stop at La Colombe coffee shop, the tour proceeds into Naylor Court, known for its many preserved stables, many of which have now been converted into unique condos. The tour then circles back to Blagden Alley, where it ends.
